Gallstones Remedy

Question by Lykaios: What are Gallstones and why is she passing another?
My mom is starting to pass another Gall stone. She isn’t much of a coffee or soda drinker though. What causes a Gall stone and how might we try to prevent this from happening again? The last time she passes one was just over 8 years ago right after she had my little sister. Any advice or information on what Gallstones are would be helpful.

Gallstones come in different forms. The most common ones are made of calcium, but there are two other types. They are common and happen to many people. The passing of them is the most painful part, and she can have them tested to see what kind it is and they can tell her how to change her diet to prevent them (she would have to catch it in a strainer or a coffee filter and take it to her urologist). I have had kidney stones 3 times, and I’m only 27. I actually have one currently that has to be surgically removed. If you google kidney stones, you will find a lot of information. Prevention really depends on the type of stone, though, so the only person that can really tell her how to prevent them is the doctor.

I am 14 weeks pregnant. Have had pain in my left side since Friday, around my kidney area. I’ve already called my doctor yesterday and he didn’t do anything because I don’t have any symptoms of a kidney infection. I called back today, and waiting for them to call me back. To see if they want me to go for tests and possibly a sonogram of the kidney to check for stones. If by chance I do have a kidney stone, how is that treated during pregnancy?

Usually they will just give you a pregnancy safe antibiotic to prevent or treat any UTI that might result and otherwise they let the stone break up and pass on it’s own.

- How does a person get kidney stones?
- What kinds of foods contribute to this?
- What can one do to prevent this from happening?

I’ve heard that one way of treating them is a doctor uses a catheter which I NEVER want to go through. I personally do not have kidney stones but I want some advice as to how to prevent myself from getting them.

Thanks

Kidney Stones are calcium deposits, so avoiding ridiculous amounts of calcium would be good.

My 11-year-old male cat (neutered and indoor) has kidney stones. For the past couple days he’s been having a lot of trouble urinating, and when he does manage to urinate there’s been blood in his urine. He’s also been vomiting and doesn’t have an appetite.

He’s had kidney stones a couple times before, and when I took him to the vet, they gave me these pills to give him, but he would just throw them up. I don’t remember what was in the pills they gave me, but I know they were an antibiotic.

What can I do to help him until I can get him to the vet? Is there any way I can help him break up the Gallstones, like a special diet I could give him? I know I shouldn’t give him dry cat food — are there certain vitamins that could help break up the stones, or ways to encourage him to eat and drink more? Also, what can the vets do to help him, other than surgically removing the Gallstones? Is there something like an antibiotic shot they could give him?

Thanks in advance!

The best way to help your cat is take him to the vet. The worst way to help your cat is to help him yourself. There are millions of ways that you could injure your cat worse. Taking him to the vet will insure your cat perfect help and health. They might give you different pills or maybe shots. They might also recmmend surgery for your cat. Please keep in mind that your helpless cat’s health is in your hands.
